Trouble shooting the home pressure system

This guide is not meant as a complete guide as to how to fix your home pressure system, however it will offer you some steps to follow that will allow you to eliminate some basic problems that arise. We are available on the phone to guide you through these steps, and we read all e-mail each day.

While this is offered to help, we can not accept any responsibility for any damage that may be caused by following these simple steps.

Pump won't turn on

Check that you have power at the power point

Use a radio or some other appliance to see if you have power at the power point that runs the pump

Check for blown fuses etc, call electrician.

Is there water to the pump

Possible that the tank has ran dry, gate valve (tap) has been turned off, or prime to the pump has been lost.

Fill tank with water, turn valve on, fill pump and pipe with water.

Pump won't stop running

No water comes out of the tap.

Turn pump immediately as the pump has lost prime or has not water. If the pump is allowed to continue to run, damage will be done to the pump

Is there water at the pump

Check to ensure that the pump has water.

Damage can quickly occur if the pump is allowed to run without water.

Pump has water but is not full of water

Check for leaks in the delivery (suction) side of the piping. Remember this is suction so a leak will not be evident by water leaking, but rather air getting into the system. Seal all joins in the piping thoroughly.

Water will come out of the tap.

If the pump is fitted with a gate valve on the pressure side

Turn valve off, if pump stops running after a minute or two, a leak in your pipes or a tap left on is the problem.

If the system is a pressure system with tank, the pressure switch may be blocked with sediment.

Turn off power, remove pressure switch and clean or call serviceman.

Pump switches on and off every few seconds.

Generally on systems with pressure tanks.

Jammed or leaking check valve. Replace with new unit or remove obstruction.

Pump switches on and off every few seconds when tap is turned on a small amount.

Generally on systems with pressure tanks.

Turn pump off, and turn a tap on until water stops running. You will find a car tyre valve on top of the pressure vessel. With a car tyre pressure gauge check the pressure in the pressure vessel. If below the pressure rating (would between 15 and 60 psi) using car tyre pump, increase pressure to recommend pressure. If pressure can not be increased, or problem occurs again within a few days, it probably indicates burst bladder. Call serviceman or replace complete pressure vessel.

Water spurts out of the tap and the pump won't turn off. Most likely that the tank has ran out of water. Turn the pump off and check the tank. Make sure that the gate valve at the tank is fully turned on (about 6 turns from closed to open)
