This page is intended to give some assistance in under standing the terms used in house hold pressure systems. This is not exhaustive and does not go into the internals of the pump.

 

terminology used IN household pressure SYSTEMS

 

Pressure vessel

Tank used to store water under pressure. Can be from the size of a football top the size of a 200 litre drum. Popular belief that the pressure in this effects the pressure that the pump will make. Has no suck effect.

Prime

Pumps can not pump air, so they must maintain "prime" Prime is when the body of the pump and the pickup pipe is full of water. The "Loss of Prime" is generally caused by a leaking footvalve.

Press Control

An electronic pump controlling switch that turns the pump on and off with the flow of water. Is generally located on top of the pump

Pressure switch

Generally a grey or black rectangular box located on the top of the pump. This turns the pump on and off as the water pressure drops or rises.
